A topic delicioso

My host mother, a typical Spanish woman, cooks two meals every day for her family: lunch and dinner. Both events take a fair amount of time to prepare with homecooked meals, a fully set table, and the gathering of members of the family. I sat down with my host mother today and asked her some questions about cooking and some of the answers really surprised me.

I suppose I knew that my host mother went to the supermercado, (how else would I have cereal everyday?) but most of my meals are simple vegetable dishes.

2. ¿Cuántas veces a la semana hace Ud. la compra?

Todos los días.

I was surprised to say the least that my host mother goes to the store everyday. Usually in the United States we only go once a week but it does make sense if most of the food is homecooked and requires fresh ingredients everyday.

I suppose that since I haven't needed to buy my own food yet that I wouldn't know if food prices have raised. But she answered quickly and before I had a moment to guess what she would say. Considering that most of the food in the mercados comes from nearby I'm surprised that there's been such a noticeable increase in food prices.

Spanish people absolutely hate to throw away food. It makes perfect sense to me that they wouldn't buy food without having plans for it.

A hour hour to an hour preparing food is not something I think I could ever get used to doing. The outcome is amazing but my American tendencies demand easy and quick food and least a couple times a week.

Pescado.

It was surprising to know that my Spanish mothers favorite dish is fish because she doesn't cook it very often.

7. ¿Quién le enseñó a cocinar?

Su madre.

I wasn't surprised that my host mothers mother taught her to cook but I am surprised she hasn't spent much time with her daughter in the kitchen.

I think my host mother watches cooking shows more as a way to relax than to actually learn to things to cook. She knows what she likes and she knows what works.
